Meiko Has Become Eclectic
The Indie culture has recently taken us by storm, and I for one am grasping it firmly with both hands. The soft melodies, made raw and real by the husky, liberated voices of female and male front persons alike are probably the best easy listening a music lover can get after hours listening to the constant thrum of technology and the blur of voices as one moment blends into another each tiresome, endless working day. Indie music can be enjoyed by anyone, it’s just that type of music, where the tune is catchy, a rhythm that sticks in your mind for days following, and the lyrics speak of things everyone can relate to.
Meiko fits into this genre almost perfectly. Her sweet voice carries some kind of edginess that makes the sound too rocky to be pop, but too soft to stretch into the rock genre. With such folk inspirations as the Cranberries, there’s definitely a lilt in the music, with some of the accompanying instruments, that make her just that little bit different.
Her dedication and love for her music is evident, especially as she released her self-titled album in 2007, without the help of a record label, and was soon soaring up the Itunes charts, to #35 of the Top 100 Albums, and the #1 Folk album, for over a month, before she was snapped up in a Myspace/DGC recording deal in 2008.
Meiko is the type of success story that warms the heart. Many talented musicians are incredibly overlooked, and never get their chance to rise to fame because they are over shadowed by big pop hits. But with the increasing success of Indie bands, I think it is only a matter of time until some of these hidden gems are discovered.
