Oklahoma Gaze
Amanda Gazin is a friend from Oklahoma. I met her some years ago while I was gathering artists for a music compilation called “MyTape“. She sings and play with the alias of “Videophonic“, she’s young and inspired and she push her way through the World armed by her own voice and guitar. Shall we step down to her parth and find out what’s happening to Young America? Here we go…
Mark Zonda: Well, now. Introduce our readers to Amanda Gazin and her deoponic Project…
Amanda: I’ve been writing music since I was pretty young. I was in a band called Kill The Sound when I started VideoPhonic. After the band broke up I started to put all my time and effort into the project!
Mark Zonda: What happened to the band then? Is it difficoult to be part of a band?
Amanda: We were not getting along very well, I used to date the drummer, then we broke up, and it was awkward!
Mark Zonda: Do you listen to indiependent music or you’re mainly inspired by classic?
Amanda: I listen to indie. I’m not that into the old stuff, exept for music from the 50′s, I love that retro sound. I also love 80′s dance music.
Mark Zonda: The 50′s? How strange coming from a young lady like you! How this
love began and who are your favourite artists?
Amanda: It all started from old movies. I hated them but I loved that sound. The Raveonettes kind of have that sound and are a huge inspiration to me.
Mark Zonda: What’s the picture of actual american youth music indie scene?
Amanda: Angst and expression.
Mark Zonda: How do you felt in love with folk music? A voice and a guitar: was
it a choice or a need?
Amanda: I’ve always liked the simplicity of folk. I started listening to some “folky” stuff in my early teens and thats what has inspired my simple songs. At first in was a need though since I quit the old band but now I’m into it.
Mark Zonda: Who are your folk heroes? Is there something after Dylan?
Amanda: Honestly I have too many! All of the sucessful folk artists are heroes to me.
Mark Zonda: Wich is the song you’ve written you’re more proud of? Can you tell
us the story behind that song?
Amanda: By Yourself is my favorite song and I’m so pround of it. Honestly there is no story behind most of my songs, I just pick up my guitar and write what comes to my head.
Mark Zonda: Do you remember the day you wrote it? Does it happen you write
stuff all in a day or it’s a slow process?
Amanda: The day I wrote “By Yourself” it was sometime around 1 in the morning and I was bored and playing guitar and trying to come up with something catchy. I have written all of my songs in a matter of minutes. All of the words pop in my head so fast it’s hard to write them down.
You can listen to Videophonic music at Amanda MySpace. Still a long way to go. The day is young and we’re moving in the right direction. Country road…
