Back to the Future
The last years of the 90′s were quite something for music. Everyone (well, almost) felt the urge to pull their socks to manage to build the music of the future. Internet file sharing, burning devices, power laptops and cheap recording systems weren’t at hand yet. Quality of music and recording still had some value. We had the opportunity to find out some great exhotic albums and some guys still had interest in open new doors to music not being afraid or feeling the urge to being catalogued by a recognisable label. Electronic music has its creative moments, but it was also the era of astract pop, post-rock, jungle and big-beat.
So it’s still a pleasure sometimes seing musicians like “The Depreciation Guild” being so brave to put some cleaverness and spice in their musical reciepe, still heading to the future and carrying on the path left open by Cornelius, Cocteau Twins and Momus. The album (“In Her Gentle Jaws”) opens with the homonymous song. At first we’ve get the impression on being on a side project of YMCK guided by Brian Eno, then everything slows down and the happy intro leave us with the sweetest dream pop guitars since years. Nintendo come back to sustain the finale. The journey begins. “Sky Ghosts” looks again like Cornelius meeting “The Korgis” back in the 80′s (“Starfruit Surfrider“?). “A Room, A Canvas” is the perfect fusion between “Pole Position”, “Asobi Seksu” and, someway, the purest C86 music, looking like “Astrolab” first big production with a little help from Keigo Oyamada.
Is it possible shoegaze a Nintendo? From now on… seem so! The Future is back, and it’s never been so cheap. Infact you can download their album for free… here!
