Magic Tantrum
They’re fresh, they are catchy, they’re inspired and font of inspiring at the same time. They are from Goatee Beach (seriously?) and they’re called Thomas Tantrum. I stumbled upon the band quite by mistake, starting to digg on their music and background because of a strange Italian tour that was meant not to take place. I missed the fun, but I gained the awareness of a great band. Here’s our little sleeptalk with Megan Thomas, leader and chanteuse of the band.
Mark Zonda: It’s no secret. I’m quite ashamed to say that, because – you know – I’m The Enemy. But the fact is… I fell in love with your band, and Thomas Tantrum is the “not so next” big thing in my little Universe.
Are you satisfied by the popularity of your band right now or are you planning to conquer the whole world?
Megan: To think how far we have come in the last year in terms of fanbase, which i never though imaginable,
we are totally satisfied by how much support we have received from existing and new fans! We don’t plan on conquering the World, we are just happy to have the opportunity to see it and meet different people with amazing talent who share the same passion.
Mark Zonda: Some have said Ting Tings, but I would go for Catatonia, Love is all, The Hussy’s, , Black Box Recorders, Where did the name Thomas Tantrum come from, and what are its musical heroes?
Megan: We all share musical hereos such as Bowie, the Beatles, Smiths etc, but we also have a lot of different musical influences and heroes, from Lou Barlow, Richey Edwards to Daft Punk and Bob Dylan. Its great to have this eclectic mix of musicians as your heroes! Its helps add an influencial depth to how we approach, sometimes even write music. In terms of the name of our band, it came about before the band was properly formed on a drunken night at a party I was talking to some mates about how I wanted to form a band and asked them what they thought I should call it. They thought it was funny that I wanted to be in a band so I got annoyed and they said why don’t you call the band ‘Thomas Tantrum’ then. Other than that the name just seemed to stick because it was catchy and suited the music.
Mark Zonda: How do you imagine your would-be Italian Tour? Have you got any message for your Italian Fandom?
Megan: We were all really looking forward to the tour because it was going to be the last one before we stayed at home to write new songs, so when Dave broke his hand the night before we were meant to leave we were all very disappointed! You just have to get on with it though and that sort of accident is just one of those things that can’t be helped, maybe it was fate maybe it happened for a reason who knows. We do hope to reschedule the dates though as soon as possible . Just want to apologize to everyone for having to cancel the tour but be safe in the knowledge we will be there soon!
Mark Zonda: I always thought that the world of Pop Music is like a big comic. And Thomas Tantrum’s video can’t prove I’m wrong! Which super power would you like to get?
Megan: The power to control peoples thoughts! then i could do anything and no one would ever know its me!
I could get in the mind of record companies and get them to sign us for a record amount of money!
Mark Zonda: You evil thing! Genious! Guess somebody has already stole that power from you! Anyway… “Rage Against The Tantrum” is the funniest and energetic song I’ve heard in a real long time. Do you usually go clubbing? If so which are your favourite venues and which songs would drive you to leave your drink and run to the dancefloor?
Megan: We were away so much last year so we didn’t really go to any clubs on a regular basis but lot’s of different ones in different places. Now we are back home for a spell I’d say the club’s we hang out at mostly would be Lennons (which happens to be about a minutes walk from my house) and Unit22. I love to dance to David Bowie’s “Sound and Vision” or Delta 5’s “Try”. Or Elvis Costello and the Attractions “Pump It Up”or the Futureheads ‘The Beginning of the Twist’. wow so many more though I love dancing.
Mark Zonda: Elvis Costello, Delta 5, David Bowie. I just bought Delta 5 collection, and I own quite any album of Elvis and David. Some of my favoudite artists of ever. No wonder I get to like your songs so much. Thanks for the interview and breakaleg for your next european tour.
