Two Good Sisters
The first time I met Johanna and Nina Piroth was during a DJSet. I was playing some music before and after their show. It was an honour. I gave up opening with my band for The Ruby Sun to be there that night. And I still consider myself lucky for that choice. I was delighted by the sweet and intimate show of the two sisters from Sweden, and I also had the chance to discover their marvellous debut cd. I was also surprisied talking with Johanna. I talked with her about a lot of swedish artists I put through the night on my selectin, and I was really surprised not only for her knowledge on the subject, but I expressed atonishmend when she said that she even played or organized event with thos artists. So young, so taleted and so much exerienced for their age! On the verge of their sophomore punk album, I had a few chat with my dear friends Piroth
Mark Zonda: Johanna and Nina Piroth. Show your music project to our friends Sleepwalkers…
Johanna Piroth: Well, we are two sisters from Sweden making music together since years ago. Started to make music in the Austrian Alps as kids, we have released one ep and our debut album on our own label Oma Gusti. Next album is on the way and it’s going to kick ass haha.
Mark Zonda: Which artist would you like to produce for your label?
Johanna Piroth: Hmm.. That is a hard one. We haven’t found that artist yet. But it’s something for the future, now we only focus in producing our own music.
Mark Zonda: When did you began to write songs? Do you usually write together or each of you works on your own songs? Tell us how a Piroth songs get born…
Johanna Piroth: We begun writing at the age of 7…but together we started maybe when we were 13.
Oh, it’s different from song to song. Most of the times someone of us beginns with a melody or lyrics and then we continue together. Sometimes I writes the lyrics, sometimes Nina and sometimes, which is the best times when we make it together.
Mark Zonda: Did you had fun touring around Europe? Which are your favourite memories of the tour?
Johanna Piroth: Yes we always have so much fun together! It was totaly great to make a train tour in italy, germany and denemark. Favourite memories…hmm, well the beach in Italy was wonderful, Chemnitz with all the punkrockers and empty houses was different but not a favourite… But Bagelshop in Munich is a great memory when our show turned in to a great jam session with musicians from Munich playing spanish guitar, flute and percussion to our songs hahah. Really funny and nice guys we met!
Mark Zonda: Is there any band or artist inspiring your songs right now? I heard you’re experimenting new sounds recently…
Johanna Piroth: Oh we both love Gravenhurst. Nick Talbot inspires us a lot. But it’s different. We are mostly getting inspiration from other things then music we listen to. Like people, the society, to travel, nature and stories in our heads… Yes we are working on our new album, a mix of acuostic folkpop, punk/rock and a bit electronic stuff. It’s gonna be different and great!
Mark Zonda: Which is your favourite Piroth song right now?
Johanna Piroth: Trans-sibirian express, a new one that will come on the next album!
