Heil to Elfs
I can’t lie you. I was really excited ’bout that gig. Elephant6 Collective has always been some kind of modern legend for me, and after listening to all of their albums and making myself a little knowledge thanks to their pre-wikipedian site, I would have never Imagined that the day would have come when I could have had the chance to see one of their band… live!
It happened with Elf Power. I admitt Apples in Stereo (check the sit out, Bob Shneider HAS GONE NUT), Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel or Beulah would have been a top, but a legend is a legend, and when a miracle happens you can’t stay too long disputing which part of gods have came down to Earth to let the magic be. And magic was. Elf Power were in great shape and showed us a great versatility on the second part of the show with the legendary Vic Chesnutt, providing wings to this little extraordinary musician and performer. Vic came in, on his spinning-chair and his gadettable-highly-customed guitar, hold to the body by a rope. He tested voice and his highly distorted effect on that poor ol’ wooden guitar shaped piece of wood, and he began to owl to the most obscure sideds of the venue his ballads of casual fuckers and ubiqitous dogs. Crowd was spellbound. Elfs and Vic managed to unite so many different indie snobs, from avant-rockers to alt-folkers, united in front of the same stage sharing a tear for the magnificent “Everybody Hurts” R.E.M. cover.
The Elfs then left Mr. “Little Fucker” alone, on an intense and emotional “Motherless Child” closing a night will sure remember for a real long time.
