SleepMarket Randevu
Some periods of my life seems like scenes from an indie remake of “Almost Famous“. Luckily. That’s one of the parts I like the most about the whole music thing. Living a show is like excaping inside a magic bubble away from reality, where there’s only place for emotions, wonder and surprises. This time the band to chase was “SpeedMarket Avenue“, from Stockholm, Elephant Records.
I met the band ad Diagonal, Forlì, in the middle of their “mascarpone con fragole“. It was love at first sight! The guys are great, and it’s unbelievable how easely someone can turn into the right frequencies with a little bit of love for music and an open mind. And of course some beers too!
The show at Diagonal was great! The last album by the band, “Way Better Now”, sticks to its name, and shows a great improvement from the previous (yet quite good) “I’m going to let my new swiss army knife answer to that”. It’s not only the better production, the arrival of Sibille Attar, a less stereotyped sound, there’s a consistent emprovement on the songwriting too. That’s all we get in the show: a very cohesive band, energic yeth with a smooth sound, kin on good melodies and fun!
Diagonal gives you a particoular perspective on the sound of the bands. People are gathered around the wooden stage, while waves bounces from thick windows glasses and walls. The next day I’d probably wouldn’t noticed it, but THERE I felt how great the voice of Sibille was, coming right out of the microphon warm and powerful not with a sweat! Her voice and Isak Klasson sang are bilanced perfectly, while the rest of the band dosen’t skip a beat and Johan Angantyr provided a real smooth and spellbounding trumpet playing.
“Believe it or not we took our Van out of Sweden yesterday and I’ve been wake for 24 hours…” Isak sais. Then he splits his legs in the air to get right on stage on the final stroll like a real rock’n'roll star.
Next day was time for Rome, on a party set up by Frigo Pop. We got back con track on the next date scheduled by Organetta at Locomotiv Club, in Bologna, where the band played after an afternoon radio show on a local radio station (quite a sort of Cure video’s version of a gran guignol dark theater with purple curtains facing the audience)
Once again it was time to enjoy the show. Listening to absolute delightful pop anthems like “Don’t fall in love”, “Tell Me No” and “The state of Armony” was like being bulleted over again with direct hits to the heart. And this time no more chairs, we had all the space to dance and fall.
The shows were followed by some of the finest indie-djset of the place: AirPop and Polaroid. A shame people didn’t felt like dancing after the show. Blame it on the marvellous merchandising. They know how to drive speedmarkets!
Such a marvellous band and human beings. It will be tough staying out of touch!
