Speedmarket Interview
Speedmarket Avenue are not just the average Swedish indie band. Their arrival in Italy made some of the best days of the year, and their last album (“Way Better Now”) it’s one of the most enjoyable collection of istant-hits I had the pleausure to hear recently. It was a pleasure getting to know Isak and Sibille. Between live shows, radio sessions and studio recordings, Isak Klasson found some time to answer some questions.
Mark Zonda: How did SpeedMarked Avenue came to life?
Isak: Speedmarket Avenue. We didn’t have a plan. We were four persons playing together when we met Johan and asked him to play with us. Beacuse wanted to include keyboards in the band. After that we recorded some songs which became the 7” Is anything ever done?
Mark Zonda: How the band is changed between the two albums?
Isak: In many ways. The most obvoius is that we had two new members. But many things happened in this period. One i remember now is that we tried to be more self-confident in the way we arranged the songs.
Mark Zonda: Did the arrival of Sibille changed your way of writing songs?
Isak: Not in a particular way that i can remember. Except for Tell me no which we made around a text that she had written earlier.
Mark Zonda: Are you conscious that you people, as musicians and collective of unbeatable human beings, are bringing joy, poetry and energy all around the world? What about your impressions on the Italian tour?
Isak: Haha. No, we are not conscoius about that. Italy was great. Nice people, good food and old buildings.
Mark Zonda: Favourite food and buldings then?
Isak: Haha. Italian people will laugh. Haha, it’s a general feeling but ok, the salsiccia at the barbecue party in Forli was number one. Bulding? There’s only one: The leaning tower in Pisa!
Mark Zonda: “Dying in Africa”, the B-Side from “Dont’ fall in love”, was your final number during the shows. Stange magic indeed. You brought an almost uncatchy disco song to a completely new level bringing us such a marvellous and inspired cover, quite like a forgotten ’80s hit from Toto played by Linda,Danny and Paul in the Wings era. What’s behind that song?
IsaK: Dying in Africa is written by the swedish duo Nicolas Makelberge. I don’t think the original version is uncatchy, it’s a great song.
Mark Zonda: Which uncatchy song would you like to pick and transform in a hit then?
Isak: Haha again. Bring em on. I don’t have an answer to that. We’ll focus on our own songs. But, we have recorde a song for a Jonathan Richman compilation that ‘ll be out on Fortuna Pop this fall. Take care and see you at Indietracks!
