A Mare
We already talked about “The Mare”, the epic band from Stockholm who wrote some serious pages on the history of indie music by travelling till London to play on a “Twee As F**k” night. Well, I was so luck to talk with singer slash guitarist Charley Rivel, and that’s what I came with. Enjoy.
Mark Zonda: The Mare, how did you guy decided to form a band, and why an Italian name?
Charley: The Italian name was more a coincident. Charley thought the mare sounded cool. He soon found out that he was alone thinking that but nobody came up with anything better so there it was. I still think it’s a cool name. Why we started I think was because we thought it to be a good way to meet people and do fun stuff. We wanted to write catchy songs we could both dance and listen to. We all love Television Personalities, Razorcuts and bands from the Benno era, around the beginning of this decade and wanted to do the same.
Mark Zonda: It is cool! Thinks about all the good feeling you can get from a music party on the beach! Talking about that… when in Italy?
Charley: It would be great going to Italy. If an opportunity comes we shure will come.
Mark Zonda: “Sunny Girl” is such a marvellous song. Happyness or Sadness. Which feeling prevails in your songs, and what about that spooky keyboard?
Charley: Thank you, we like it too. Our lyrics are often about not very happy subjects. But when we put them in a pop context we believe they come alive. They turn out happy and honest anyways. The miracle of pop maybe. The spooky keyboard is an old yamaha-keyboard that Anders both for 20 Euro.
Mark Zonda: 20 Euros! How conveinent! Talking ’bout intstruments… which are the most peculiar you own?
Charley: The Kazoo is shure peculiar. It sounds so funny and strange.
Mark Zonda: How did you came in contact with Cloudberry Recors/Series Two? Did it changed your life?
Charley: Roque from cloudberry contacted us and wondered if he could release a record with us. We of course said yes and we were about to record some new song anyway and thought it would be perfect. Chris also did the first contact. We had this song “You don’t know” written and thought it would to be cool to release on the Series Two compilation.
Mark Zonda: What do you find more inspiring, Beatles or Bustops?
Charley: Must say Beatles, it is the greatest and coolest band ever. Bustops are boring.
Mark Zonda: Your performance at “Twee as F**k” has become a legend! What do you remember about that night, and can introduce our readers to this UK parties collective?
Charley: The Twee as F**k gig was thanks to Cloudberry. Twee as f**k was the coolest. We had the best time ever. Rory is such a nice guy and showed us London, especially Primrose Hill and The Mixer. It was really crowded although we were the first band playing. We just wanted to play as many songs possible in 20 minutes. I think we did 8. We all remember it as being a really great gig. Both bands were great and the DJs were fantastic!
