Feel The Pain
It’s no secret. One of the band still able to light up the flame on my musical passions are “The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart”. Not only the band was a marvellous discovery via Cloudberry Records, having a great EP from “Fortuna Pop“ – a true collection of istant hits slightly growing on me after each listening – but my good feelings on the band reached the apex after their live show in Ravenna. That special euphoric night they promised me an interview, signing their mail address on the dark over of their debut album, unlikely wet out by the rain. So here they are! We had a little talk with the most wanted member of the band (I’m talking about groupies), Mr. Kip Berman.Mark Zonda: “The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart”. How did you decided to form a band and who picked such a long name?
Kip: We were all friends, we were nerdy and obsessive about music and it seemed a fun thing to do… the name is taken from a children’s story written by a friend of mine.
Mark Zonda: What was the story dealing with?
Kip: The story’s moral is that the things that are important in life aren’t worldly power and fame, but the fun adventures you have with your friends when you’re young.
Mark Zonda: How did you came through Cloudberry and then Fortuna Pop?
Kip: Cloudberry Records did a tremendous “100 singles” series that we were honored to be a part of – we were lucky number 13 and it was our very first release. As for Fortuna Pop, Sean from the label saw us in New York, and as he had already put out records by some of our favorite bands (Comet Gain, Aislers Set), we were psyched to put out our record with him too.
Mark Zonda: Since the soundcheck, during your show in Ravenna I was hit by the clean and precise quality of your live sounds, while listening to the album I was expecting delays and a lot of loud distorted noise. Is there any choice behind that?
Kip: Well, sometimes our shows are louder and more raw, but it’s hard to really control that from venue to venue… we just try to play our songs as best we can and have fun.
Mark Zonda: I heard that you had a great time in California, in particular during the tv-show. California Vs Ravenna Beach. I know it was a bad werather day, but… main differences?
Kip: Well, since we didn’t actually get to see the beach in California – Baywatch doesn’t count, does it? – I’ll have to say Ravenna wins by default. It was beautiful, despite the rain. But we hope we have a lot more chances to compare and contrast…
Mark Zonda: Is there any paricular Italian city you would like to visit?
Kip: I’ve never been anywhere, so maybe I should start with Rome. I don’t know a lot about Italy, but i’d love to see more of it… both Ravenna and Milan were incredible experiences.
Mark Zonda: Are you gonna be the next Blur?
Kip: We’re just happy being The Pains…
