Jagged Carnival Tours
First time I heard about Ariel Pink was because of a review on my first demos for Tiny Tide. Voice was yet unsure, and I really enjoy playing with all kind of filters and effects, such as echoes, reverbs, distortione and delays. There was also me trying to make first moves on trying to be my own sound editor, with very unconventional results. Paragons with Ariel came easy for the reviewer. What was naifitiy for me, it was a choice for Ariel Pink. At least I suppose. What I like behind the songs, it’s just melodies with a little bit of experiments. I don’t really care for technique or finy tuned voices. What I’m looking for it’s just being original, having a sweet tooth for melodies, and have something to say. Ariel has it for sure, since he became the first padowan under the wings of Animal Collective and he keeps on releasing an album each yead (although I suppose it’s quite easy speed things when you get to records your music on heavy low-fi ways).
Then his live. This year. MAGIC. So unexpected I couldn’t even dream about it, and I guess I’ll have to thanks Zuni (the name of the Ferrara’s venue) for this marvellous chance. Knowing Ariel very strange and unpredictable attitude toward his works and his way to live music… I didn’ really knwo what to expect, or even if I should have to get ready to be scared or delighted. Fortunaltely it was a real sweet show, with Ariel being disturbed sober (I mean… he didn’t singed on the roads of Ferrara dancing on fountains in a pink tutù. He just ended pointing his raging finger against me and few other people) and supported by a REAL GREAT GOODLOOKING AND CAPABLE BAND. What amazed me the most was THE CROWD. There was really a lot of people, the place was packed, and noone did left the show till the end. People was even DANCING to never heard before songs (let’s be serious: no-one beside me, Frida Vermina and Mr. Brace has ever listened to an Ariel Pink song in Europe). And this was great, because – somehow – Ariel managed to project the same LO-FI hypnotic uneffable sound of his home rcordings, with a triple echoes voice not even struggling to reache te surface of the floating bubble sound of his rubber beat orchestra. Moment of the show? When Ariel decided he really liked the acoustic of the bathroom and closed himself on it carrying on his songs from the place, leaving the crowd waiting for his big comeback. Not even Roger Waters on the The Wall midshow.
I bet more people will start to listen to Ariel Pink since that gig. Even in Europe. Still I wonder if anyone is listening to his songs on US. Quite sure about Mars.
