Fuck me, I’m twee
Right before Nirvana started to excite every kid in the planet with their dirt grungy sound, another American musical scene, originated basically by “The Softies” and “Beat Happenings”, was secretly building his elite snob niche for the future slightly bringing to life another movement. It was Twee. The US response to C86 movement. The eponimous anthem from Tullycraft was more than an anthem. It was a hit! That song was taken the classic “Fun Beat Surf”, still one of my favourite from the band, even though band gained the state of cult thanks to its first “Darla Record” release on 1999. “Fun Beat Surf” it’s a pure joy manifesto starting from the album title. Pubblished by “Magic Marker Records” the album was - magic magic - all recorded on analog tapes.
Guitars and choirs are perfectly untuned following the happy march of drums and direct bass lines absolutely mix-free (you can even listen to some voices from the recording hall). “Radio Theme” is a punky made up title that Sara Love would probably have been pleased to steal in the nearby revival future, while “Kock out” and “Cowgirls on Parade” open the ways to the next generation of indie blokes ruled by “Los Capesions!” and “Sky Larkin”.
Definelty. If you never heard anything ’bout that band and you’re into indie music, you can’t avoid to wildy go into the summer withoud having listened to the magical Tullycraft. “Fun Beat Surf” is a good start to approach that band and enjoy your summer days. Go out and find it. “Play the meow-meow”. NOW!
