Laughing With Regina Spektor
With the recent release of her stunning new album, Far, it seemed apt to write about Regina Spektor, an artist who I have adored for years. I honestly cannot get enough of her, with her original blues voice and her catchy, theatrical songs. She is definitely one of my favourite singer/songwriters, and would easily come in my top ten of favourite overall artists.
It has always been the rough edges and mischievousness of her songs that has hooked her fans, and she doesn’t fail to bring that to the table with songs like Folding Chair and Dance Anthem of the 80’s on the new album. The lyrics
‘I’ve got a perfect body, because my eyelashes catch my sweat’
are sheer genius; the obvious humour is just another thing that characterises her, though she does sing about some serious issues, and has featured in human rights albums such as Sing For Tibet – The Art of Peace and Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur.
It is admirable things like this, along with her enormous vocal range and increasingly innovative lyrics that keep Regina Spektor from becoming dull. I hope that she never feels that she should change her style in the aid of becoming a more ‘popular’ artist, because it is her individuality and unique manner that has drawn her loyal fans.
