The Carreras: Viva La Vivian
I waz young I didn’t have change in my head”
It’s good to be young. There’s a new universe to discover outside, and it’s sweet to look back at those fresh days where everything is a new discover and the World is a oyster full of obscure promises not too far out of touch. That’s the force and the weak point of “The Carreras”, one of the most interesting promises from Glasgow crazy enough to have an interview with us.
Mark Zonda: The Carreras. Are you proud of being Glaswegian ? How did you match up to start a band?
David Lan: Of course we are glad of being glaswegian! we have been voted the friendliest people in the world apparently, and the music scene is great! we were all best friends in school and I met our guitarist alan when we worked together in the local library. I had written some songs, and decided to get my best friends together in a band. quite a nice little story!
Mark Zonda: Carreras the Librarians. Talking ’bout books, which are the ones that had more influence on your adolescence?
David Lan: My favourite books when i was small was pretty much all roald dahl, “The twits” in particular is one that i loved and taught me some good moral fibre! it should be compulary in schools. I have just realised through this question that I always tend to read fiction and imaginative writing, i guess i must be a bit bored of real life! A book which affected me a great deal was one I found in my uncles beach apartment one summer on holiday when i knew I had to write a book report when i returned after the holidays for school. It was called the famished road and was a magical story about an african child, poverty, and the spirit world.I somehow felt more mature reading it, and when i read it again years later and loved it even more.
Mark Zonda: And now the Spinal Top Question: since you’re named after a quite famous tenor, have you ever been influenced by classical music?
David Lan: I like to think I’m infuenced by all good music and classical is definitely on my playlist when I’m just relaxing or lazing about. One of my favourite pieces of music is the classical piece “laras theme” from the movie dr zhivago. I think it’s amazing.
Mark Zonda: Lara’s Theme is fantastic! Do you love film score music? Which kind of movies would you fit in if the world should decide to have you in a soundtrack?
David Lan: I do love film score music, I think music and visual go hand in hand, so if a film gets the right soundtrack then something really special is made. the only scene i think our music would fit is the same scenes i picture when i think of the lyrics.
For example our song “caving in” is all about the stresses of university, work among other things piling on top of you and feeling everything falling apart. quite grim, so I guess It would be quite a depressing movie scene where the character is having a mental breakdown!
Mark Zonda: Ediotors are the most overrated musical band in the whole musical industry. Are they or we have to blame their clones?
David Lan: I think its hard to place music in nutshells, it’s so subjective. one person can think your favourite band is terrible and you just can’t understand why they can’t hear the same magic that you’re hearing. I do think that it is a bit poor for bands to try clone each other, theres no fun in copying another band and missing out on finding your own sound. I think it is important to take inspiration from other bands however, to have something to aspire to and you hear a bands music sometimes which just makes you want to write songs as good as and try harder.
Mark Zonda: What’s so romantic in being teenagers?
David Lan: I think anyone whos passed through being a teenager can relate to how romantic a time it is, its the age old story of guy meets girl or vice versa and more often than not, it doesnt work out or ends badly and you learn from it hopefully. it may be quite a cliche subject but I find these are the topic of songs i tend to listen to, all my lyrics are personal to how i feel or past experience. Overall, I think its important to wrote about things or feelings that people can relate to so that when they hear your lyrics then can associate their own lives and connect to the song in a deeper way perhaps, and make their own little interpretations on what the song means for the band aswell. Theres no point in someone listening to your completely strange abstract lyrics wondering what the hell you are talking about at all!
Mark Zonda: What’s worth, reject a girl or a good idea?
David Lan: If I had to choose between a girl or going with a new idea, I have no idea what i’d do! Happiness is important, and if the girl was something really special, she should understand your choice in a hard situation. I hope i never have to make the choice. people come and go, the ones that are still there when you take the time to sit back and look around you are the ones worth making sure are always there.
Mark Zonda: What do you think about the new Sweden Pop scene? Which band would you guy win on a fight?
David Lan: If im being perfectly honest i know little to nothing about the new sweden pop scene! Im sure like in any places there will be great music just waiting to be found. If we ever visited sweden we would be sure to try play a gig and check out the music talent! What other band would we win in a fight with? I hope we would never have to fight, because we’re really not such an aggressive group of guys, but if we had to I think we could fare well because our bassist jack is a beast.
Maybe we could take the rolling stones because they are pretty old, or a girl group? perhaps that would be a bit unfair though….
Mark Zonda: Vivian Girls Vs Oasis. Who wins?
David Lan: I have to admit i am not the biggest oasis fan. overall in terms of talent i guess they have to take the prize, but on simply being interesting new and fun, I’m with the vivian girls.
