Feeding The Waves
Probably not all of you have heard of a man called Darren Hayman, still I bet the most indie-fanboys out there reading this blog are more familiar with a band named Hefner, someway quite a cult for not so many pop-snobs listening to bands that don’t evene exist. The most impressive feeling that I got interviewing Darren is… that he is actually fucking nice! An ideal neighbourgh, let’s see what he’s got to say…
Mark Zonda: Darren Hayman, please introduce yourself to our readers
Darren: I’m Darren I used to sing in band called Hefner. I’ve made four solo albums that are actually better then the Hefner albums but less known.
Mark Zonda: How can you sum up your “Hefner” experience? What went wrong, if there was something wrong?
Darren: Nothing went wrong. Everything went right. Especially when we split up.
Mark Zonda: The first time I’ve heard “Bands that don’t rerform” I was istantly hooked by melody, sounds and the very lively and catchy voice. When it was the first time that you realized that -hey! – you were actually good? And do you love the band that don’t perform too?
Darren: I would love to be a band that doesn’t perform. Performing live is just an economic necessity. If I could have my way I would do two gigs a year and release five albums. I don’t know that I ever realised that I was good. I think if I ever realise I’m good then it will be time to stop.
Mark Zonda: I couldn’t agree the most! Give us more “Pepper”. Are there also artists you would stop for being not good enough?
Darren: Almost everyone. We could survive on just 2% of bands out there. You should need a license to buy a guitar.
Mark Zonda: How did your collaboration with Waver Pictures started?
Darren: David Tattersal from the Wave Pictures used to send me his songs from a long time ago. Then they started coming round my house when they got hungry. The friendship grew from there.
Mark Zonda: Can Feeding artists get a dangerous hobbyfor band keepers?
Darren: My wife says, we don’t children. We have the Wave Pictures instead.
Mark Zonda: Talking bout strange record formats and crazy labels, how did you get in touch with Italian Black*Kitten?
Darren: I think Antony got in touch with them first. black*kitten are crazy. They seem to think that record labels shouldn’t lose money. That’s the point of a record label. To lose money!
Mark Zonda: Ah! Ah! Ah! How right! Is there still a poing nowadays on keeping a music label alive? Which are your favourite ones?
Darren: Well no there IS a point in having labels and keeping them alive, there’s just no point in trying to make money.
Mark Zonda: “End Of The Road festival”. Some good reasons on why this festival rocks and why to be there…
Darren: Live peacocks. Cider Bus. They just work hard to make it feel right. I guess they do this largely by pulling together like minded artists.
