Baby Shannon
I came through Shannon Stephens sweet gentle melancolic music thatnks to Miranda Lange, a friend of mine from Chicago. She’s a kind of ufficial/unofficial voice for so many acclaimed bands such as Cocorosie and Calexico. From time to time she feeds me with some interesting news, and Shannon was a delight not to be missed, like some unespected breathe of chill on an August night.
Shannon started her adventure in the World of Pop Music along with the almost famous Sufjan Stevens in a band named Marzuki, having her very own moment under the spotlights when Bonnie Prince Billy picked her “I’ll be glad” for a cover on his work “Lie Down In The Light”. Almost a decade has passed since her self-titled debut album. Then zip. Time to synchronize watches again for her comeback, just right after the summer, with a fresh new album called “The Breadwinner”. 8th of September is the date, Asthmatic Kitten the label.
Here’s how the album’s gonna be: sounds comfortable and daring at the same time, kind of like one of those late hour over-coffee conversations with a close friend. Recorded in her living room over the last year, The Breadwinner belies its humble roots; with themes of love, home, family, and a vision of the end of the world, yet the lush and exquisite sound of this album is anything but domestic. Musical course set on the line where pop and american alt-country collides with some hints at Iron & Wine, Julie Doiron and José González.
Consider yourself lucky. We’ve got a preview! (Thanks Miranda!)
