No. And the Maybes?
Country-Rock. Aggro Jazz. Nerd Ska. Mmm… Art-Grunge. Jam Ska. Possibly Sample-Metal? It’s a NO. And alternative pop? It’s a… MAYBE! Fact is that sweet good ol’ indie-pop it’s ready and easy to find, still like sugarwater for our taste. “No and the Maybes“, Copenhagen, reach to keep us company with an enjoyable cleaver music. Quite a miracle if we’re trying to reach for some substance behind all those coloured bubbles. Let’s get to know them better and have a little talk with Troels Tarp.
Mark Zonda: Ladies and Gents, “No and the Maybes. How did you decided to form a band, and how long since you’ve been together?
Troel: Well once upon a time three youngsters …no really, we met years ago starting out by playing all sorts of things in different combinations. Mainly experimental free jazz. No and the Maybes was born out of this jazz endeavour and has existed for approx. 2 years now. It was probably because our jazz path came to a dead end closed up for possibilities – that and a growing urge to write catchy music and really dive into the mechanisms of other genres.
Mark Zonda: One to 10, how much do you think you’re fitting the indie band stereotype? Did someone helped you out with the production of the most recent stuff?
Troel: Ahh … hope it’s about a 1 or perhaps 2? Well dunno. And what is this indie band stereotype? Isn’t it just what guys say when their girlfriends get into a new indie act. Only thing we can say with a fair amount of certainty is that we would hate to be a stereotype. The production on the album was mainly carried out by ourselves. We had to borrow a set of ears in the process though and these belonged to the danish producer Morten Bue.
Mark Zonda: What’s the secret for having a “Single of the Week” on BBC6? Which bands would deserve it?
Troel: The badly kept secret is that you have to sleep with everybody in the industry. And don’t expect to get as much as a Christmas card! And of course a great deal of people trying to push your stuff helps a lot too. The only bands who deserve this is of course bands with talent, something new, cathcy and sincere.
Mark Zonda: Was “Petra Petrified” written in Berlin? Would Sir David Jones Bowie would be ok with this song?
Troel: “Petra Petrified” was not written in Berlin, but on the band couch. And we are sure that D.J. Bowie would be glad to have it on his ipod. In fact if anyone has a free ipod please fill it with No and the Maybes and send it to him.
Mark Zonda: Can three guys from Denmark lead the Uk council thanks to brit-pop?
Troel: Absoulutely not. They would have to bring something extra. That little thing which is their very own. A bit of Scandinavia perhaps? Herring and snaps!
