So long HomeSleep
Just around 2005 in Italy indie scene came to form a certain defined shape. A scene came along thanks to important artists and live shows, independent radio and mysterious television shows (flux!), and an important circle of bloggers that defined the scenario also thanks to coordinated actions with clubs and venues (“Losing my badge” and “The Kids At The Club” naming a few).
Not that the scene is dead, still labels are quitting one after another like paper castles, leaving place to artists self productions, collectives and booking agencies.
We recently experienced the departure of MyHoney, now it’s time to Homesleep. maybe the most valuable Italian label thanks to its international action and resources. You couldn’t be indie in Italy ignoring at least one incarnation of this label at the times.
They started their activities with one of the first biggest names of the underground surroundings, “Giardini di Mirò”, that is the Italian equivalent to “Sigur Ros”. Big names focused on Ancona and Bologna area, where portraying bands got easy with such important historic venues such as “Il Covo” and “Extragon”. That didn’t stop Homesleep not investing on international names, such as the “twinnies” Ian Fays (I think they had more live in Italy than in America, they were EVERYWHERE, they even did open a Pete Doperty show!) and “Easy to cook”, possibly one of the best albums of 2005 by “Austin Lace”.
Never being really clear how deep was their influence on the magazine “Losing today”, being said that possibly “Midwest” was the most astonishing band of the rooster, with their country western banjos, pale skins and reddish hair, Julie’s Haircut the most psychedelic, and the grungy power pop Micecars the coolest galbusters of the niche, “Yuppie Flu” will remain the most important and beloved incarnation of an era. “Our Nature” from the band masterpiece “Toast Master” will be forever the anthem of our y2k final years friday nights.
