Amari: just more than a lot of love
2005 was a magical period for Italy and indie music. Thanks to mysterious tv networks that came from out of the blue like pirate stations on the tube with a non stop of indiependent local an international acts, underground parties and a bloom of local labels, some new interesting acts managed to emerge from the midst of our plains. One of those bands managed to hold on in time keep on emproving songs and sounds. With their new album “POWERI” (a mesh up of Power and the Italian word for poor Poveri) they’re trying to share their alchemies of rock and elettronica with the rest of the World. Their name is Amari. Here’s my interview with Il Pasta.
Mark Zonda: I guess that there’s no need to explain who or what Amari is to an Italian bloke even slightly interested on our indie scene. Still your new album “Poweri” has got some interesting and strong traks… in English! Would you like to show your band to our international audience?
Il Pasta: Yess, we always try to get our music to new ears, so thanks to some blogs attention, we’ve tried with these song in english, let’s see what happens! For those who don’t know us at all, here is the story so far! Many years ago we where a couple of friends that tried to put something new in our boring hip hop scene, ten years and endless tours later, we’ve ended to be five great friends who play what we love to call “wrong pop music”.
Mark Zonda: Did the new tracks made in English were born to experiment new directions or were you thristy for a wider audience? Are you “trying to throw your arms around the World”?
Il Pasta: I should say both, we always try to do something new and unexpected for us and for our listeners, needless to say that singing in english could bring our music abroad. If not to with the whole world can I say we can start with Europe, uh?
Mark Zonda: Which band would you like to play with having to live for an “Amarican” Tour?
Il Pasta: I guess that they all should be cool guys, not boring ones, nor “rave all day” ones, and speaking about the music, of course we should have something in common, I could name WHY? or LOCAL NATIVES (just to name a few). These could be great bands to tour with.
Mark Zonda: “Amari” family is not only notorious for being a great innovative band, but also for their producer and re-mix activity. One of the most enjoyable parts of your albums are actually… sounds! So well arranged, catcy and cleaver. Still your shows… rock sweat! Live or Studio, which is Amari top choice?
Il Pasta: Impossible to choose one! We love both the same way, and of course while on tour we dream about recording, mics and sequencers, and while in studio we dream about being on the road! I guess this is the thing that keeps Amari moving!
Mark Zonda: As for me it’s a “No Doubt” on “Campo Minato”. Still… which is your favourite song, and the one most loved by your audience?
Il Pasta: It’s hard to believe but we love them all! Normally the songs that we love immediately tend to get boring after few gigs, whereas we find ourselves deep in love with the underdog songs that we rarely play live!
