ART!! BRUT!! TOPOFTHEPOP!!
First time I heard ’bout this fucking amazing unbelievable band was back in 2005, on the hype of Fracesco Ferdinand hype. Art Brut songs were devastating just like Babyshamble “Fuck Forever” or Kaiser Chief “I predict a riot”. Still “Emily Kane” had something more. That’s right: irony! Irony, energy and a posh driven cleaverness so britty tipical of the most poppish Pulp and Fall, though their leader Eddie Argos is ready to swear he only heard about them once journalists started to write about this comparsion on their reviews. I suck on remembering lyrics songs, I even can’t get right my own on live shows, still back in 2005 there was no indie hipster unable to shout each part of their “Emily Kane” word by word while wasting their feet on the dance floor. They did played in Bologna that year, and I damned myself because a hard snowfall stopped me from reaching Covo Club.
Back to those days, those NME heroes were on the verge of their popularity, but hardly criticized for their live shows for not being as good as in their debut album. A shame that – at least outside UK – this band has improved a lot while their success has flown down a bit (a friend of mine didn’t even know that a new album was out till the very day of the gig, and she’s a fan!). A shame. I went to an Art Brut show a year ago and it was A BLAST OF A SHOW, full of energy, good music, enthusiasm and entrainment, being Eddie Agos the nicest craziest smart ass on Earth. And this year was even better (A shame not so many people came to the show) since their “Back in Black” opening.
I had a little talk with Jasper Future, and he told me he was really happy ’bout playing at Bronson for so many reasons, from the band having their fun each time they came in Italy (especially first time they came to the summer location of the club at Hana-Bi) and they finally would have come back home after the exhausting American tour.
Favourite moment of the show? Me myself wasn’t really aware of the songs of the last album, and I laughed myself to death on the band parody of Iggy Pop “The Passenger”. “I wasn’t aware of what Iggy Pop really meant when he wrote that song, and I really thought he would probably have been simply an enthusiastic user of the public transportation…”
Possibly the most irreverent song Eddie Argos has ever written. So cleaver, funny, brave that deserves to sup up the gist of one of the greatest and genuine pop rock bands of our times.
