Out of the fog, Into the leisure
It was a strange night indeed. Me and my friends awaited The Leisure Society concert with a great anticipation, as we all were impressed by their genius and complex arrangements combined with such soulful and touching melodies. No wonder that the project is de facto a superband of professional musicians starring in different bands, actor and independent filmakers. Anyway. A strange night. The awaited gig was supposed to be at Covo Club, THE club in Bologna, so famous for its night along not for being the nicest stage when it comes to sounds, but the sudden death of Max Bonini, the man who had brought so many guests to the place, had The Leisure playing in Locomotiv, something half away between a wide ex factory, a permanent IndieTracks location and a grand guignol theatre, capable of bringing out the most appropriate and crystalline sound from soft bands like that.
And suddently everything was perfect. We found the place, the fog was gone, and we were introduced to one of the finest live shows ever. The band and the songs, even the audience were so perfect that everything seemed like a dream (blame it on the strings!)
- They told me someone is coming from Florence? How far is that?
- One hour by car
Then someone on the left replied:
- We came from Milan! TWO hours!
- Hey! I come from London!!
That was the brilliant Nick Hemming reply, that we can easily take as a sample of his ironic personality (he even invited a person to leave for having been too generous on judging the show)
- I cut my finger a bit. Don’t know if this will turn out well
- WE LOVE YOU ANYWAY
… t’was the reply from the girls in the hall
The real surprise? Just when a people in the audience complained that it was too easy facing a crowd with a ukulele after Jens Lekman did five years ago, and the clocks in my brains were thinking ’bout how stupid it was not considering Greg Hawkes and George Harrison did it since * mmm* a lifetime, here it was: we were gift with the most amazing live cover of Beatles “Something” I ever experienced, with people ceasing to hold its breath just to applaud with real enthusiasm from time to time during that everlasting number. Christian Guy Hardy Perrins ukulele solo part was the priceless cherry on top of an unforgettable night. Not exactly just Turin Brakes on strings.
