A night with Mojomatics and guest
I sometime wonder what does it takes to a new band to deserve a little special place in my heart. Could it be the astonishing voice of the singer? It usually never happens. Usually the magic trick is done by melody and a good song writing, with a bit of originality in mind, still that’s not always true. Take “Movie Star Junkies” for example. Didn’t know the band, but it was one of those little positive collateral effects you get to be involved in when you’re stuck in the club waiting for the main attraction: here it is, the opening act.
Noise, noise, a lot of noise and TONES of powered up loads of high volume distorted guitars and noise, half of the band unnecessary, half of the songs portraied just the same song in carboncopy, a band fucking good if presumed just to being there for fucking rock’n'noise but to see with suspicious eyes if the intention of their performance was to be the Italian response to “Baby Shambles”. What made the difference? The attitude, singer ‘s charisma, a very sensitive and capable guitar, drummer messin’up with usual drumsets, and a very charismatic singer, never letting your attention fade for even a second and always keeping a special tension alive each second of its performance, which apex was reached when Stefano (that’s the singerItalian name) jumped off the stage to disappear behind curtains, grabber a iron stair to throw it over an amp, fixed the microphone on that starting to play along the drummer over it using the artefact as a brand new musical instrument.
The other great surprise of the night was actually the main attraction: The Mojomatics. The real surprise on a band doing a garage show guitar/drum in the old manner? The improvement in sounds and execution. They seemed as many as “We’re From Barcelona”, they were only in TWO! If you can bear this kind of show after the tenth track and you’re just cool at picking a couple of random clips on youtube, you’ll get the only considerable serious Italian competitors to Ravonettes and Sons & Daughters, expecially checking out their last work.
Everything was set at Officina49, that actually provided along with Covo Club some of the best live nights of the year.
