Still Flyin’… never gonna touch the ground!
So I’m asking you. When you do like a band? I know if for sure because I had all the symptoms, such as leaving 40 Euros on band’s desk buying all their discography and at least a shirt (and the official dancer of the band tryed to stop me from committing this wallet financial suicide telling me that just the last album was enough). The band I’m talkin’ about is “Still Flyin‘“, the last of the glorious indie pop band collective rising the flag for all those blokes enjoying youth, fun, and catchy melodies portraying their songs with as many mediocre players as possible such as “I’m from Barcelona” and “Billie The Vision And The Dancer”, all of them riding the tide of The Flaming Lips idea concept that a live show should be a party more than just a passive experience.
The “Still Flyin’” project was born when Sean Rawls had to move from Athens to San Francisco, deciding to make possible to perform his would be hit “Never Gonna Touch The Ground” in as many places as possible counting on different members helping his project all across the world. Their last album, produced by Moshi Moshi Records (Architecture in Helsinki, Au Revoir Simone, Hot Club De Paris, Kate Nash, The Mae Shi, Matt and Kim, The Rakes, Tilly and the Wall, naming the fews) it’s well produced for sure and pure joy for your stereophonic ears.
The point stood. What the hell was supposed to doin’ a Californian Collective in an obsucre place in a small Italian Village nearby the sea? The beginning of our evening at Retro Pop was as odd as cartoonesque band’s pop stereotyped faces, having youngsters dining pizzas at long talbles in front of the stage, reaching the apex when they let BMX riders into the hall having odd maneuvers in the dark!
Guess what these guys from California wondered ’bout this place, expecially later, when an old maniac jumped on stage trying to approach the young lady ad the keyboards (I run at home adding the band in the Wiki page for Alesis Micron addin their name among Tiny Tide and Pedro The Lion for bands actually using that synthesizer).
Coming to the show and the music: they both were great, if for 45 we forced ourselves to accept the idea that the “Help! …It’s the Hair Bear Bunch!” guy did nothing but the raggae version of the robot dance from one side to the other of the stage shooting balloons on his mates.
I spent the whole show looking to a strange girl looking far way too “Love is All“ singer lookalike, still how was it possible having a chanteuse from sweden attending at a Californian indie band playing in an obscure Italian town? Guess what: her she was!
That’s why after having my pocket to band’s merchandise I turned my back to the Hari Bear guy and I spent the rest of my time telling Josephine Olausson how great her band is! Guess having his husband playing for the European division of the collection gave a little push to the wheel of faith. Still Flyin’ was a quite ok deal just the same.
