Roma Pop Fest: Lodger with Carpacho!
Luckily enough I was in Rome to enjoy at least one night of the indie club collective “Frigo Pop” called “Roma Pop Fest“, the 3 days indie festival that brought to the Italian Capital la crème of some of the finest international bands from the scene. Sad part of the story I stayed only for one day, and I wasn’t able to see “Fitness Forever” (already playing for Indietracks) and “Jules not Judes“, and emerging band from Brescia with a brilliant EP at their back.
Anyway. Anyway.
Festival took place in a nice club called MADS, in a wicked part of Rome full of small roads, pubs and restaurants, and the blokes in charge of the event did a great job makin’ it as comfortable, sweet and indie as ever, with decorations and barrows selling gadgets, cd and DIY stuff. “Lodger“ were one of the few things I could count in the world to set up a great night in a club, quite the epitome of indie party band, and though not too confident on the show (bright lights set on their faces didn’t help?) they delighted us with their classic anthems till “the end of the day” and showed us some new tunes. The real surprise was “CARPACHO“, a band from Rome (let’s say… the ITALIAN BLUR from Rome) whose songs I used to admire but I never had the chance to hear live, since the band split 2 years ago. Guess what! Blur did it, so happened to them, and the miracle was practically done! What hit me the most was the hot welcome boys and girls from Rome gave to the band (that seemed really comfortable and at their place with that).
For a moment seemed like having Duran Duran playing in small crypt, with girls crying and shouting band members names and everybody singing outloud each song without missing a inch, and that was the part making me a little bit unconfortable (I can hardly stand the hype).
Still what a band! They diserved any smile and shout from the crowd, great tunes, great performers, great presence on stage. Irony, cleverness and creativity should all be part of the perfect guideline to give Italian singed pop music a little bit of dignity in this sad radiophonic valley of singing deads. Glad CARPACHO were resurrected and Roma Pop Fest showed us the way.
