Quasi Fan
Thanks to Bronson and Covo Club and two gigs not so far from each others also in matter of temporal coordinates, I accidental managed to crown the unconscious dream of seeing two of my favourite niche bands from the past. Both short named, both underground heroes from the grunge era, both listened to a cult program called RAI Stereonotte (the Italian bro of John Peel sessions), both in the perfect mixtape I made on 1993 that the bass player of my fist band never gave me back. We already told you about Polvo, it was now time for a band called Quasi.
Don’t know if we have to blame it on people’s reaction on KEXP band exibition, but Sam Coomes looked alive and funny than ever (ask to all the stuff thrown down in and out from the stage) and Janet Weiss powered’ up and ready to blast those drums. Sam Coomes guitar was magic, while I was really surprised by the quality of his subtle and warm voice. Quasi was indeed a band from another time, and seeing them was quite like spotting a dragon in the distance of a rotten dungeon. Crib’s Gary Jarman’s wife and ex Elliott Smith girl Joanna Bolme accidentally did all the best she could possibly do to get Janet pissed, from forcing the band to start without her, having problems with her amply, not forgetting the out tuned bass. No wonder Janet put so much force and anger on that drum!
From Nirvana to Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Quasi managed to move me also for the skill of being able of being just three blokes bringing on so many moods, with that unique Seattle sound oh so precious to be heard alive with my own ears.
Sam was ready for its encore at the condition people would have shouted the name of a song. Since that night everybody was a Quasi fan, but all of us was unable to call for a single fuckin’ song, I went for the most obvious thing to do and I shouted:”JOHNNY BE GOOOOODE!!!”.
Would you believed it? Sam took his guitar and began to play just like a ringing a bell! It was “Quasi” back to the future!
