Partybenders
Some months ago, I think it was winter since I felt really melancholic and I didn’t sweat, I was quite intrigued by a band called The Morning Benders. Gee. It HAD to bee winter, possibly autumn, since the only thing I remembered reading that name on Hana-Bi calendar was that I knew I liked them, still I had no idea ’bout who they were anymore. Warm voice, up to date sounds, mono-chord melodies, the singer trying to be the pet exotic version of Paul were enough to bring some video-clip memories back to the brain lighting some neurons up.
“Gee! I think I NEVER sweated so much on a show”, said Christopher Chu to the band back to the audience. Coming from a guy who spent most of his summer in California it really meant something. It was a very selected and Very Indie People show, still the band didn’t manage to have enough personality to make still a good show with remarkable sounds an experience. The two covers, “Dreams” from Fleetwood Mac and “Cerimony” by Joy Division/New Order (quite an hazard for a quite disinterested enchore) where a perfect example on the ups and the weakest points of the band.
They’ve got style, they’re really smart on blending voices and instruments (still sometimes you got the impression it takes two of their guitars and a bass on the work of one single experienced musician) but they still lack the anger and the experience of a great band, quite making the difference between mesmerizing and annoying if you’re portraying very slow committed ballads on a live show. Still they’re really young and talented. Time is on their side and I’m sure there will be able to bend our attention too.
